On February 19th, 2026, the entertainment industry and people all over the world mourned the loss of beloved actor Eric Dane, who passed away at age 53 due to ASL. Also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, which is a neurodegenerative disease. It is said he passed peacefully, surrounded by those who loved and cared about him most.
Eric Dane had publicly announced his diagnosis in 2024, though his family says he’s been silently battling the condition long before it was revealed to the public. He shared that he would continue to work while combating the disease. Though in the past year, his health has rapidly declined as the disease progressed. ALS affects the nerves in the brain. This soon leads to loss of muscle control. This also affects speech, usually resulting in slurred words and delayed, little movements.
Discovered in 1869, well over a century ago, ALS still has no cure, but treatments for this disease are still actively being searched for as research and technology progress.
Dane built a career with memorable performances. One of his popular ones, from the hit ABC medical drama, he played the well-known, charismatic, complex surgeon Dr. Mark “McSteamy”. This not only shot off his career but also became a fan favorite amongst many.
Other than Grey’s Anatomy, Dane was also featured in other shows and movies such as Charmed, Little Dixie, One Fast Move, and Kabul.
He was most popularly known as Cal Jacobs in Euphoria. This role skyrocketed his career with his character. Audiences give mixed reviews on Cal himself, but admire the embodiment Dane put into this character; he became a fan favorite amongst many.
Eric Dane’s passing is something people will remember for many years to come. With his inspiring career and his strong battle against ALS, his legacy will live on, and many will remember him for his impact on the entertainment industry.
