NASA is bringing the four astronauts of SpaceX Crew-11 back to Earth early due to one of its members facing an unspecified medical condition. The crew was supposed to return in late February, but because of this unforeseeable circumstance, they were forced to arrive on Friday.

SpaceX Crew-11 is the eleventh operational NASA Commercial Crew Program flight. They launched on August 11 with the plan to stay for six months. The key objectives of the mission were to conduct scientific research for microgravity’s effects on stem cell production, engineered liver tissue, viruses, and tissues, as well as improve orbit technology and upkeep the space laboratory.

This early return marked the first time in over 65 years that a human space flight mission had been cut short because of an astronaut’s medical concerns. While this shows a limitation in space, that even mild medical concerns still can’t reliably be treated while in orbit, it also reveals something deeper: Even though humanity seems to be rapidly evolving, with the thirst for discovery, new technology, and advancements, prioritizing one astronaut’s health over all of these things shows how we still live in a world where people come before power.
