The World Baseball Classic has yet again proved to be an electric, fun, and awesome tournament to watch. As the WBC comes to an end, let’s recap the championship.
Venezuela v. USA
The championship kicks off in Miami at Loan Depot Stadium. USA takes home team advantage. USA starts right-handed pitcher Nolan McLean from the Mets, while Venezuela starts left-handed pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez from the Diamondbacks. The game goes scoreless up until the top of the third, when Salvador Perez (C) starts the Venezuelan offense with a single to right field. Then Ronald Acuña Jr drew a walk, moving Perez to second. Maikel Garcia (3B) then hit a sacrifice fly to center field, allowing Perez to score and moving Acuña to third. Proceeding, Luis Arraez (1B) struck out, ending the inning with a 1-0 score. After that, the game continued scoreless until the top of the fifth, when Wilyer Abreu (LF) hit a 4-seam fastball to center field for a 414-foot home run, making it a 3-0 game. USA failed to respond until the bottom of the eighth, when Bobby Witt Jr (SS) drew a walk. Following that, Bryce Harper (RF) blasts one to deep center field for a home run to make it a one-run deficit. Aaron Judge struck out right after to end the inning with a 3-2 score. In the top of the ninth, Arraez walked and was subbed out for Javier Sanoja to pinch run. Sanoja proceeded to steal second base, and three pitches after, Eugenio Suárez ropes a double to center field, allowing Sanoja to score. The inning ends with a 4-2 Venezuelan lead. USA failed to respond in the ninth, allowing Venezuela to become the 4th newest country to win a WBC title.
