On July 4th, 2025 over 100 people lost their lives in a flood that unexpectedly occurred in Texas Hill County, specific areas being Central Texas, Kerr County and The Guadalupe River.
How did this happen?
Kerr County has been in a drought since the beginning of 2025, when something like this happens in an area it makes it more susceptible to floods due to the soil being unable to keep up with a flash flood like this one. This left a big mark on Texas history and the community of Kerr County.
Emergency response and death toll
During the fierce flood, many lives were in danger with many being taken. Officials counted 119 total deaths in Kerr county from ages ranging to 1-90 years old. A lot of these deaths occurred near Camp Mystic where numerous campers and staff got swept away by the rushing waters. The 911 calls that were released from this incident really shows the terror in the voices of those in this situation.
Recovery Efforts
Nearly six months later, the recovery of Kerr county continues. Progress is slowly but surely excelling to rebuild Kerr County. Millions of dollars were raised in efforts to support those facing times like this, in total 10 million dollars to help homes, businesses in the area to try and return to normalcy.
Remembrance of what’s lost
Many unexpected people lost their lives, homes and what they shared together before this incident. Funding of 1 million dollars was given to help support and expand mental health access in the area for those after facing a traumatic event like this. More than 6000 adults report PTSD and serious emotional distress. Funding of 1.4 billion dollars was given to the cause which was denied by Kerr County officials after being said it wasn’t enough for homes, area reconstruction and businesses. This also can’t make up for the lives lost and the mental distress people have to deal with for the rest of their lives.
