Maria Arujo, a Brazilian fitness influencer and triathlete, died during the 2.4-mile swim portion of the Woodlands Iron Man on April 18, 2026.
“I never imagined I would feel so much pain and sadness over losing someone,” her partner said.
Her body was recovered by a dive team at around 9 a.m., submerged within 10 feet of the North Shore Park waters, approximately 2 hours after she drowned.
“I dove in immediately and began searching,” volunteer Shawn McDonald said. “After about a minute underwater, I felt her body with my foot. I surfaced, took what seemed like the deepest breath I have ever taken, and went back down. She was gone.”
A biopsy is still ongoing, attempting to uncover the exact cause of her death. At the moment, simply “drowning” has been denoted the main reason, though a combination of factors, including the rainy weather and some weakness from previous sickness, has also been inferred.
“It’s just so many things that could’ve been a part of her death,” freshman Violet Pullan said.
Iron Man officials and many of Woodland’s residents offer their condolences to Arujo’s family.
“Our love is eternal,” one of her fans said.
