Traveling during the holidays is dreadful. Being trapped in a moving vehicle with your family for hours at a time. If you are on a long trip, there is nothing worse than having your phone die and having no way to charge it. Fortunately for you, here are five ideas to help make time pass more quickly.
Number 1: The ABC game
This game has gotten me through some hectic car rides with my family. Playing is simple. All you have to do is look for words that start with the letter you are on outside the car. For example, if you are looking for the letter A, you might find a sign that says “All Traffic Through” in it or on a sign that says Arby’s. The point of the game is to finish the whole alphabet before anyone else. This is a great game for long road trips and a great way to look at the world around you.
Number 2: The “Anything” Game
This is a game where someone selects a random word. It could be an animal, a place, or even a color. Then the person describes their word in three sentences, but tries to keep it vague so it isn’t straightforward. Next, each person takes a turn guessing the word. After everyone else has gone, the person adds another description to the word to help narrow it down.
An example of this would be if I chose the word heart. I would describe it like so:
- It can speed up and slow down.
- It constantly works 24/7.
- You can measure it.
Number 3: 20 Questions
The rules are simple. You pick an object, place, or person. Each person takes a turn asking a yes-or-no question and keeps going until someone finally guesses your word or until you reach question number 20.
Number 4: Read a Book
When you don’t have your phone to distract you on an exhausting road trip, a book is the next thing. Pick a genre you love and dive right into a world that’s not your own. Reading a book can help pass the time with no problem. You won’t even realize that you reached your destination when you are stuck in a book. There are also coloring books or word searches that can help on car rides. These activities can help easily distract you for a good, measurable amount of time.
Number 5: Talk
When trapped in a car with family, it can be hard to focus on something to pass the time, so rather than trying to focus, relax and talk to your family. Take a trip down memory lane. Talk about past experiences, laugh, and enjoy the time you are spending together.
These five ideas may seem dull, but they are efficient in helping pass the time on a long road trip stuck with your family. The ABC game, the “Anything” game, 20 questions, reading a book, or just talking are great activities to hold your attention and make your trip more entertaining.
