The Leo Club, a youth organization sponsored by the Lions Club, has long been dedicated to providing students with opportunities to give back to their community while also gaining valuable skills for their future. Although still growing, the club’s mission is to offer a fun, supportive environment where students can contribute to meaningful service projects, earn volunteer hours, and build lasting connections.
“There aren’t many members, and we want it to be a club where kids can earn volunteer hours through the school to put on their resumes. We also provide scholarships, and there are people you really wouldn’t meet otherwise,” said Micah Blair.
The club’s impact on the community is felt through various service initiatives. One of their main contributions is the Hand Me Up Shop, which helps provide clothing and essential items to children in need. Blair expresses his pride in the club’s work, saying, “I’m really proud of our contributions to the Hand Me Up Shop.” Looking forward, the Leo Club has a big event coming up on Saturday, December 7th, where they will be working with the Hand Me Up Shop again. “It’s a special feeling to make a positive impact,” said Micah Blair. The club also organizes events like their recent outreach at Hailey Elementary, where members had the opportunity to interact with younger students.
For Blair, being part of the Leo Club is more than just volunteering, it’s about building relationships and understanding the value of socializing and teamwork.
“Being part of the Leo Club really requires you to understand what it takes to be good with people,” said Axl Brich.
Socializing is a big part of it, and it’s important to understand that different people have different strengths and weaknesses.
The club also offers several benefits for its members, including access to scholarships and the chance to meet others they might not encounter otherwise.“The Leo Club offers scholarships and opportunities to mingle with other people in a small club, and it’s really fun.” While the club is still working to grow its membership, “it remains focused on creating a welcoming environment where students can find camaraderie and make a tangible difference.”
Promoting the club and getting students involved has been one of the club’s ongoing challenges.“Getting people to join and commit to it is definitely one of the hardest things, and we’re trying to really promote the club a lot as well.” Through efforts like setting up posters and using social media, including Instagram, the club aims to raise awareness and encourage more students to join in their mission of service.
For any student interested in making a difference while gaining leadership experience, the Leo Club is an ideal place to start. With the support of the Lions Club, scholarships, and a chance to make real connections, it’s an organization that not only helps the community but also helps its members grow.
