This year, College Park had the most nominated, most votes casted, and closest vote totals in the Teacher and Humanitarian of the Year selection process.
“We have such an awesome staff and very talented people that do an outstanding job,” Principal Dr. Mark Murrell said in an email announcing the winners of the awards.
After votes were casted, the awards were given out to the winning teachers. Associate Principal Secretary Rachel Wheat was awarded Humanitarian of the Year. Additionally, Health Science Theory and Medical Terminology teacher Kelsey Richards was awarded Rising Star Teacher, and Special Education teacher Erin Newcomb was awarded Teacher of the Year.
“When Dr. Murrell came into my class, I thought he was there to observe me teach so I just kept on lecturing. I was shocked when he stopped me and made the announcement,” Rising Star Teacher Kelsey Richards said.
The teachers were notified of their award during their class time or during lunches. Dr. Murrell himself delivered the awards. Richards began her career as a health professional, then took the leap of faith to become a teacher.
“This award gives me affirmation that my leap of faith was worth it,” Richards said. “I always want to improve my teaching practice, and this award gives me encouragement that I am on the right track.”
Additionally, Humanitarian of the Year Rachel Wheat thanked her mentors. “Receiving this award is a true testament to the amazing mentors and support system I have here at College Park. It is a tremendous honor and I am deeply touched and grateful for this recognition and the appreciation it represents,” Wheat said.
“This award is the best award I have ever received. To be recognized by so many amazing and accomplished educators is the highest honor,” Teacher of the Year Erin Newcomb said.
Congratulations to the teachers who were awarded these esteemed awards. We are lucky to have people like them on our staff. Along with these amazing staff members that are deserving, if you wish to congratulate your own favorite teacher, give them a Teacher Acheiving Excellence, TAE. It goes a long way.
