After the grueling information on how the planet is in jeopardy due to climate change, it is now time to look at the way each of us may contribute to saving Planet Earth.
To start, on President Biden’s first day in office he re-entered the Paris Agreement, which is a legally binding treaty to keep global temperatures under 1.5 degrees celsius. The UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change said that crossing 1.5 degrees may lead to worsening climate including increased severe droughts and hotter temperatures.
In addition to bringing The Paris Agreement back there is also a Carbon Tax, making people pay for their carbon emissions, designed to encourage most industrial owners to turn against pushing carbon into the atmosphere.
Carbon Tax in Tax Foundation (2023) said, “It is generally seen as a cost-effective way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”
The government is not the only one entirely willing to help change the climate for the better. We can collectively band together and take the right steps to become a cooperative species on the planet.
In the article 18 Simple Things You Can Do About Climate Change, Kat Kerlin (2019) said, “Bringing your own bottle or mug. It’s a teensy thing, but bringing your own reusable cup or coffee mug is easy and feels good. Sometimes you even get drink discounts for using these things.”
There are many simple steps you can take to help the earth and bringing your own cup would be just one of them, the need for more people to be aware of this issue is prevalent and it’s the small stuff like this that can slowly improve the climate.
“Turn off some lights.Turn off lights in empty rooms (of course) but also ask yourself, ‘Do I really even need this light on?’ I recently had a meeting in a climate science professor’s office that was only lit by daylighting from the window and it was, well, enlightening,” Kerlin said (2019).
The Earth is suffering but we can bring it back. If the Earth suffers, we suffer. Spreading the message on how to fix our environmental issues is extremely important. Getting the word out there can give a chain reaction of more and more taking up these precautions. It is never too late to start trying.
David Herring and Rebbeca Lindsey (2022) posed the question in their article, Can we slow or even reverse global warming? The authors concluded, “Yes. While we cannot stop global warming overnight, we can slow the rate and limit the amount of global warming by reducing human emissions of heat-trapping gasses and soot (‘black carbon’).”
