It’s important for 9th and 10th grade students to start researching jobs and careers that would best fit them, said College and Career Counselor Mrs. Florian.
Students can do this research on sites like Naviance, Roadtrip Nation, and Big Future. These sites also offer aptitude tests to help students further explore themselves. In addition, freshmen will meet with their academic counselors during course selection, and sophomores will meet with their counselors this Fall to make sure they are on the right track.
“Eleventh graders should research, where I would go for the training for these career fields I had discovered when I was looking,” Mrs. Florian said.
Eleventh graders are encouraged to start researching colleges, which can be done on the same sites as before as well as on individual college websites. Mrs. Florian will be holding a “Lunch and Learn” during A, B, & D lunches on Wednesday, August 30th to help students know what to look for. When researching there are a number of things to consider.
“Does the college have the major I want? Is the college affordable for me and my family? Do I have the grades and academic experience to get into that college? Is it a likely, target, or reach school? Is this the kind of social environment I want to go to school in and is it the distance from home I want? That’s the kind of different things to look into,” Mrs. Florian said.
In order to help get this research started, College Park will have a mini college fair during lunches on Tuesday, September 26, 2023. There will also be a college night with over 100 college reps at the Lone Star Convention Center in Conroe. Finally, almost 50 college representatives already have visits scheduled before the end of October in the College and Career Center, which juniors and seniors can sign up for.
“Twelfth grade focuses on making the application and getting it all lined up,” Mrs. Florian said.
Seniors are entering the final stage of the process, as they are starting to apply to colleges. However, one important thing is still missing – GPA and rank. Senior GPA and rank will be updated in mid September, after registration closes and all former students are officially withdrawn. Additionally, to help with the process, all senior English classes will be visiting the College and Career Center for a period-long presentation, and all other students are welcome to stop by the College and Career Center with questions.
Mrs. Florian concluded, “I would advise them to look at those research topics for their particular grade level, open their eyes wide, talk to people, don’t worry about your college applications, everyday come to school, everyday do the best you can in all your classes, choose classes at core selection time in the Spring for the following years wisely, challenge yourself to do your best everyday, and all the rest is going to fall into place in a good way for you,” students are encouraged to stop by with any questions.
