Chatting on the Morality of OpenAI’s ChatGPT

“OpenAI’s mission is to ensure that artificial general intelligence (AGI)—by which we mean highly autonomous systems that outperform humans at most economically valuable work—benefits all of humanity,” OpenAI’s charter said.

OpenAI was a system of artificial intelligence built to aid people in research. Their goal is to allow others easier access to a multitude of information. However, they just want to help others improve the world through OpenAI.

“ChatGPT uses the GPT-3.5 language technology – a large artificial intelligence model made by OpenAI that has been trained on a massive amount of text data from a variety of sources,” Arianna Johnson of Forbes said.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT allows users to type in a prompt and will create a detailed and clear answer using its complex programming. Additionally, it has the ability to write college level essays or provide users with information.

“One of ChatGPT’s biggest shortcomings is that it habitually repeats itself in successive responses when you ask for elaboration. Additionally, it’s something of a learned skill to figure out what exactly you need to tell ChatGPT in order to extract the exact information you want,” Senior Skyler Schenck said.

While the program is impressive, it has a limited and somewhat dated knowledge according to professionals. In addition, it can be picky about how a prompt is worded. One question may receive no answer, while the same question refraised is fine. Another issue is that the site can only handle a certain amount of traffic, so you may have to wait for access.

“The decision by the largest U.S. school district to restrict the ChatGPT website on school devices and networks could have ripple effects on other schools, and teachers scrambling to figure out how to prevent cheating,” Matt O’Brien of Fortune said.

The New York School system is banning OpenAI in their schools, due to the cheating that students are using it for. However, AI is not only a problem in New York, it is being used in high schools all around the country.

“ I like to think of it as a No-Fear-Shakespeare translator on-demand. Furthermore, directly asking it short-answer prompts can yield surprisingly adequate results. To be clear, I do not endorse and have never used ChatGPT to directly do an assignment for me. However, it offers what I think is a fantastic jumping off point to further elaborate on, kind of like offering a rough thesis statement for you to build around,” Senior Skyler Schenck said.

Some students like Skyler have been able to use ChatGPT in order to improve their assignments, as well as get work done more efficiently. However some students misuse the platform by plagiarizing the results.

“The creators of ChatGPT say they’re also looking for ways to detect misuse,” Matt O’Brien of Fortune said.

While they wanted it to help students research, OpenAI did not intend for their program to be used for cheating. They have been working on a prototype to detect their writing.

“OpenAI’s tool is hosted on Hugging Face (https://huggingface.co) and it is called GPT-2 Output Detector Demo (https://huggingface.co/openai-detector) that was developed by OpenAI,’ said data scientist Sung Kim.

OpenAI’s new program tells you a level of probability that a certain writing was generated by Chat GPT, while not perfected the new site will likely help educators detect cheating. In addition to this new program, OpenAI is working to watermark all their works, so that students are unable to pass it off as their own. I entered the question: “What is the best highschool in the Woodlands, Texas, and why?”  Open AI generated an answer based on their knowledge.

“The best high school in The Woodlands, Texas is The Woodlands College Park High School. The school has consistently been ranked as one of the top schools in the state due to its strong academic programs and excellent extracurricular opportunities. The school also has a strong focus on college readiness and provides a variety of college prep classes, as well as college counseling and support. The Woodlands College Park High School also has a wide range of sports teams and clubs, and is home to some of the best performing arts programs in the state” OpenAI said.

I ran the question again to see if the wording would change, and the program responded with an entirely different school as the answer. When I ran it a third time, I got another school with a similar explanation to the first two. Finally the program once again responded with College Park, and had slightly different wording from the first one.

“In conclusion, the use of ChatGPT and other AI-assisted writing tools in education raises a number of ethical concerns, including issues of originality, intellectual property, and fairness,” said Moosmosis, a site on children’s education.
