When you think of cheer, you probably think of the sidelines of a football game. But after the Friday night lights dim, they move into their next mode, competition season. On November 6th, cheer competed at the UCA Houston Regional Competition at Moody Garden in Galveston, Texas. College Park opened the competition with their new UIL routine.

“To prepare for regionals, we had practice every Monday and some Saturdays. We did countless full out routines and critiqued each other to figure out how to make the team the best it could be,” sophomore Emma Gratland said.

The cheer team competed against 27 super large varsity cheer teams in Galveston on the 6th. They are coming back to The Woodlands with a bid to the National High School Cheerleading Championship (NHSCC) as well as a Top 10 title for the UCA regional event.

“My favorite part of the regional competition was our pep talk before we performed on the mat. It was five minutes of support and prayers for each other and overall a great way to hype the team up. And, placing in the top 10 was also a pretty great feeling,” senior Abby Tartaglia said.

The cheer team is preparing for their next competition on January 12th-14th, the UIL State Spirit Championships at the Fort Worth Convention Center. As cheer gets further into the season, the girls are continuing to work in order to show their school spirit on the competition floor.

“We have really big goals to make it into the top 10 teams in the state. Last year we made CP history by becoming the 1st all girls squad to score 16th at State. But, once we found out that we only got 16th by .15 points, that was definitely our biggest motivation to keep working hard.  Basically, we all have to work together to score high, so when I go out there on the mat, I do it all for my teammates, coaches, and myself,” senior Kate Luckett said.
