Indigenous People’s Day

Indigenous People's Day

Emily Hughes

Excited about the four day weekend? Wonder why we have Monday off? Well, October 10th is Columbus day. Instated in 1937, Columbus day celebrates Christopher Columbus’s achievements and his discovery of America. Due to some controversy over Columbus, many people have suggested that we create a different day. After decades of suggestions, one finally stuck, Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

Native Americans have faced a lot of hardships since colonization first began, but finally on October 8, 2021, US President Joe Biden instated Indigenous People’s Day. Taking place on October 10th, it is meant to celebrate the strength, resilience, and contributions of the original Americans, who have spent hundreds of years being displaced from their lands and pushed out of their homes. Here at College Park we have the day off from school as part of our four day weekend.
