The Met Gala

This year’s Met Gala had so much potential, with the theme Gilded Age, which was supposed to highlight how during the 1870s “fashion reflected a wildly changing time of society and its norms” according to Vogue. During the late 1800s clothing became more over the top, and highlighted the times advance in technology. The theme had much potential yet none of the celebrities attending the Gala reached it.

First off, Kim Kardashian, wore one of Marilyn Monroe’s dresses, specifically the dress she wore when she sang “Happy Birthday” to then President John F. Kennedy. Kim had to lose 16 pounds to actually fit into the dress, and she only wore the original dress walking up the steps and quickly changed into a replica. As well as her shout out to Marilyn, it was the first time Pete Davison and Kim walked the red carpet together.

As for the other Kardashians and Jenners, for the first time ever all of them attended. Kylie Jenner wore a wedding dress, I don’t know why, with a baseball cap, who told her that worked? The wedding dress itself is beautiful, but heavily downplayed by the hat and flower attached to her head. Kourtney Kardashian showed up with her new husband, Travis Barker, and wore his tailored suit as a skirt. On top of the shirt-tailored-skirt was a cropped white dress shirt, once again who told her that worked? Khloe Kardashian, making her Met Gala debut, showed up in a gorgeous floor length dress. The gown was covered in 540,000 glass beads that were all sewn in by hand, although she was slightly off the theme she was single handedly the best dressed Jenner/Kardashian. Kendall Jenner wore a huge ball gown by Prada, the skirt had large ruffles and was very detailed, her top on the other hand was a mesh tank top. Lastly, Kris Jenner wore a yellow caftan while she waited for her girls.

The showstopper, Blake Lively, showed up wearing a gorgeous copper colored dress with a huge train. As she entered the gala and went further up the steps the copper skirt revealed a gorgeous turquoise color. Her dress was a tribute to the Statue of Liberty, as it was originally copper colored and turned into the green it is today. Her dress featured architecture from the Empire State Building and the constellation of Grand Central Station, and other references to New York City. My favorite part of this dress was Ryan Reynolds reaction, he stood shocked while she changed her dress, which is adorable.

While Blake and Ryan were on theme there were a few others, including Billie Eillish. Eilish showed up in a corset bodice and green detailing, her long mesh sleeves featured many embroidered flowers and her chunky black choker tied the look together. Billie’s look was definitely out there but I quite liked it.

Along with Eilish’s on theme look, the Briderton cast also arrived that Monday night. Regé-Jean Page, better known as Simon, wore a blue velvet suit to his first Met Gala. Phoebe Dynevor wore a sheer black gown, with black embroidery all over it. Nicola Coughlan wore a fussy dress. The dress was pink and black and fit with the theme, apart from the large feathers, fitting with her show name, Penelope Featherington. Lastly Simone Ashley wore an outfit inspired by her character Kate Sharma. The set was a brassy top and a long black skirt. The whole Bridgerton cast looked stunning as usual and were able to follow the theme well enough.

The 2022 Met Gala had very good potential, but so many celebrities showed up wearing prom dresses. Overall I think everyone should have better researched the theme, they had the chance to show up wearing ball gowns and only a few people took that.
