As the spring semester begins, so does the CP baseball team’s 2022 season. The team looks forward to enjoying more of their recently found success, with the addition of some new players, ready to take on the field.

The Cavaliers varsity baseball  team is coming off of their best season since 2017-18 as they finished the year 19-14-1 with a 10-5 district record.

“The most important thing for a team is the culture and our culture this year is second to none. We are a family ready to compete for each other,”senior third baseman Nick Tanguma said.

In order to have a successful season, and achieve these goals, the team has stated that they are going to need contributions from everyone. Unlike other teams though, the Cavaliers are going to have to rely heavily on the performance of the underclassmen.The varsity team is only returning with 3 starters from last year.

“We lost 11 seniors last year, but coming back this year, you have Holden Rook who is in the outfield, Harrison Helton, and Edgard Bermudes, who are all seniors. We just have this ‘next guy up’ mentality. Yeah, it sucks losing those guys, but there are guys who worked just as hard and that’s just the process“ said Head Coach Faherty.

After last year’s disappointing round two exit in the playoffs, the team looks to hopefully make another run. However, this year’s team is nothing like the team that went two rounds deep last year.Just like with any other sport at CP, the consistent answer for a potential game of the year, will always be The Woodlands, but unlike other sports the second most common answer for baseball is Bridgeland, as they eliminated the Cavaliers in two games last year.

“We have a great chance to play Bridgeland again this year, and we are ready to get revenge. Obviously, The Woodlands is our biggest rival, and I feel like we are going to be well prepared this year,” Orr said.

Now, as the season inches closer, pre season prep is in full effect. Players are making those last needed adjustments to their game, and the coaches are finalizing the rosters, as the Cavaliers prepare for their first taste of baseball in almost a year.

“We’ve been working hard during the fall and we are ready for this upcoming season. We have great chemistry. After last year, we are not satisfied and are expecting better results,” second baseman Edgard Bermudez said

The varsity season is set to start on Thurs., Feb. 4th in Cy-Fair, as they have a pre-season tournament spanning three days.

“This season we all had a positive mindset, and great chemistry. We will do what we know how to do. We can compete with every team we face. The results will be positive for our team,” said senior Jesus Parra.
