The overall growth and evolution of the College Park football program under head coach Madison is undeniable. Coming off of the first district championship in school history the vibe around every game has shifted significantly from previous seasons and the swagger of the players, on and off the field, makes for an exciting show.  

With year two of a Covid riddled football season about to kick off, the defending district champions are looking to repeat the newfound success they had last year. The season started Friday, August 27th when varsity unfortunately lost the season opener to the Cinco Ranch Cougars at Woodforest Stadium. We then bounced back with a win over Bryant last Friday.

 “The expectations for this year have increased tremendously thanks to our success last year,” senior defensive end Andrew Edmonson said. “I anticipate another district championship.”

With every new sport season comes new challenges. Like every other sport, each season presents a new challenge. This year, the team will have to deal with the loss of key players on both sides of the ball. 

“It’s high school football. Every team graduates seniors every year, so we just have to have guys step up every week,” Edmonson said. 

Of course with the departures of long time starters along the o-line and defense, that leaves holes that new players may step up to fill. “Adjustments are gonna be made throughout the year so that we can get the best 11 on the field,” starting quarterback Ty Buckmon said. “We have a lot of very skilled players returning on both offense and defense starting with seniors Andrew and Perry Irchil.”

Throughout all interviews, one name seemed to pop up very consistently, senior receiver Alex Brigman who, like his team, has set very high expectations for his on the field play. The 3 year varsity starter is looking for that breakout season that could finally land him the scholarship that he’s been working for.

“Well for myself, I expect to be totaling 1000 yards and 15 touchdowns this year,” senior  receiver Alex Brigman said.

Another common theme in all interviews was the general dislike for The Woodlands High School and Conroe High School. What once seemed like a one sided rivalry with The Woodlands High School has recently seen a rebirth with the newly found success of the Cavaliers football program. And what seems to be a new in division Rival with the Conroe Tigers promises to leave this season without a dull moment.

 “The Woodlands is the obvious answer, but the Conroe game is always fun, and there’s some extra bad blood this year, so that’s one to be excited for” Edmondson said.

 The game against Conroe High School will be October 22nd at 7:00 at Moorehead Stadium. They are set to face The Woodlands High School at 7:00 pm on November 4th at Woodforest Stadium for an away game.
