A Resilient Basketball Season
January 21, 2021
The College Park athletic department has been exceedingly threatened by the pandemic yet has maintained resilience through it all with adjusted season schedules, safety procedures, and sacrifices; the basketball program is no exception.
What started as an uncertain season where coaches and players played things by ear from practices to games has turned into a very successful season. Although adjustments have been made, they are what’s best for the teams and school. The most recent of these adjustments is the current social distancing arrangement during players’ lunch period. Players no longer eat in the cafeteria but in the gym spaced apart from each other. Coaches have implemented this precaution to reduce the player’s exposure so that they may finish their season strong.
Games have been limited in occupancy from the season’s start to allow room for social distancing and comfort among the spectators. Players are encouraged to wear masks before, after, and on the sideline during the game.
The varsity basketball team, made up of 13 active players, is currently number one in the district with eight district wins and zero losses. They are 17-3 this season, combining district and non-district games. The team has looked promising from the start, having an impressive roster of players, including Indiana State University commit Drew Calderon, who leads the team with 17.6 points out of the average 72 points per game. Their last game, Wed. Jan. 20th was a win with a score of 70-51 against Oak Ridge.
The junior varsity team has brought the heat as well this season, going 12-4 in total. These players have considerable talent, consisting with mostly juniors with a few sophomores for a total of 13 players. Together they average 61 points per game. They have won five and lost three of district games, but things are looking up with their last big win Wed. Jan. 20th with 77-60 against Oak Ridge.
The season is far from over with a little over a month left of games, rounding out the season with district and regional finals for teams that qualify. Sat. Jan. 23rd will be the second round of ‘War of the Woods’ for an exciting home game between the Cavaliers and The Woodlands Highlanders; 10:30 am for JV and Noon for Varsity.
