What Do You Feel Like Doing?

Thanksgiving Break Edition

What Do You Feel Like Doing?

Hannah Dollar

Not planning on going anywhere over thanksgiving break? Well, there is plenty to do in the greater Woodlands Area! Once again, I have created for you a guide to maximize your adventures over this break, but with a twist. Find your next experience based on your mood:

If You are Feeling Charitable

Oddly enough, the pandemic has created even more opportunities to volunteer, particularly this holiday season. Don’t let virtual platforms discourage you from the experience. Please take advantage of this year’s charitable causes and show support to our community’s motivation to keep on giving.

  • Virtual Run Thru the Woods
    • The YMCA has not forgotten about their 31st annual Thanksgiving tradition – Run Thru the Woods. As with everything this year, there are a few changes, but it sounds just as fun. This years’ virtual event features a 10 Mile Run, Super Triple 18 Mile Race Challenge, and Team challenges for running (or walking) in groups or family teams. If a competition wasn’t enough to convince you, it is all for the cause of supporting the YMCA’s mission to ensure the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive for everyone, regardless of age, income, or background. Funds raised through this Virtual Team Challenge will go towards programs that eliminate drowning, increase academic performance, reduce chronic disease and childhood obesity, and increase social equity opportunities. Join this interactive and rewarding cause from now until December 5th.

  • Interfaith Toy Drive
    • Interfaith of The Woodlands is collecting new toys and gifts for children in need of some holiday cheer. Toys can be dropped off through December 4th, throughout the week at specific drop-off times. Visit their website to access their Holiday Giving Amazon Wish List and learn about more opportunities to give back this holiday season.
  • Toys for Tots & Crust Pizza Co.
    • This year Toys for Tots has partnered with Crust Pizza Co. to be a drop-off location for this year’s campaign in hopes of receiving enough donations to give each child three toys. Receive some delicious free garlic knots or cheese bread for donating new toys at their select locations through December 12th.

If You Are Feeling Hungry

The Woodlands is home to so many hidden gems, especially in a foodie’s world. These are some of my newest go-to’s when I’m hungry and looking for an equally appetizing atmosphere.

  • Deacon Baldy’s

    • If you have yet to enjoy the unique and tasty selection of food trucks Deacon Baldy’s hosts, then you are unquestionably missing out. Join them throughout the week for their recurring events like their amusing Trivia Night and mobile kitchens. Bring family, friends, human and furry alike, to enjoy the outdoor atmosphere, friendly staff, and their enticing menus.
  • Gessner’s Grub BBQ Co.

    • If you are like me, you haven’t heard of this place, as it is charmingly tucked away between two auto shops. Skeptical? I was too. But giving it a chance, I was astounded by the flavor and quality. Have a picnic-style lunch on the outdoor patio situated outside their trailer kitchen, where the BBQ magic happens. Try the Brisket Breakfast Taco; you will not regret it!
  • Third Gen Coffee

    • There is always something going on at Third Gen Coffee, whether that is a limited partnership with local businesses, holiday specials, or just their unique atmosphere that is hard to find. Being one of my most favorite coffee shops, I would like to boast the quality of every drink they make as well as their pastries and sandwiches. Stop by to try their original seasonal drinks, enjoy their outdoor or indoor seating, and chat with the amiable staff.
  • Bruster’s Real Ice Cream

    • This place has become a haven for my friends and me when craving a retro hang out and something sweet. With a design looking like a walk-up ice cream parlor out of the 80s, along with the boldness of the imaginative flavors (as well as the traditional flavors), the Bruster’s experience is outmatched. If a hang out spot isn’t what you are looking for, then look no further than their attentive drive through line. There aren’t many locations around, but the drive to the closest one is totally worth it!

November 21st, 10 am – 2 pm for holiday shopping, complimentary products, and more.

If You Feel Like Being Trendy

I am always struggling to find new and exciting ventures; I get stuck doing the ‘same old thing.’ Here are a few things I think might spice up your break as a teenager.

  • Take Photos With Film

    • Sure, maybe I am inspired by our generation’s trend of using old fashioned methods of taking pictures with film cameras and polaroids. Still, there is something to be said about the meaningfulness of capturing a memory in such a way. Try your amateur hand with these photography methods with friends and family to experience the value of pictures not taken on our phones.
  • Showboat Drive-In Theater

    • Yes, drive-ins are still a thing! Get a group of friends, grab some concessions snacks, and watch a double feature in the comfort of your vehicle. Maybe even choose a chilly night and get comfy with some pillows and blankets to feel this season’s spirit.
  • Watch the Sunset/Sunrise

    • This does not even have to be romantic. Snag some takeout with friends, drive to the top of a parking garage and watch the sun do its thing.

Hopefully, one of these adventures inspires you to go out and make the most of your Thanksgiving break. Even if not, I hope you enjoy your well-deserved break and join me next time for my guide of things to do close to home.
